Riding the wave

Debby Topliff

September 12, 2011

My decision to display my work at ArtPrize this year has set in motion a giant wave of activity as I tick down a five-year-old to-do list of framing giant paintings, unearthing emails, learning FaceBook and Mail Chimp, overseeing a new website, having signs and postcards produced, and on and on.

Just as a wave reaches down to the ocean floor, swooping up sand and shells and rising to the breaking point as it approaches the shallowing shore, my life is being swept along to an exciting yet scary destination. I keep telling my family and friends that I feel like a tsunami surfer. As long as I keep my balance (and get a good night’s sleep), I’ll be fine.

It also helps to remember the purpose of all this activity: to let others see the reality of God that I’ve been privileged to paint. The God I know walks on water and stills the storm. And invites us to walk on water with him. Painting the life of Jesus as recorded by Mark has given me an intimacy with that Word-Became-Flesh and the fragile brave humans who knew him, followed him, ate with him, listened to his teaching, marveled at his miracles, and shared their stories with us.
