John 2

Wedding at Cana

Turning Water into Wine

Jesus and his new disciples travel to a wedding in Cana, the hometown of Nathanael (see John 21:2). Jesus (in blue) is sitting at the left end of the table with the disciples.

Jesus’ mother (standing next to him) alerts him when the wine is gone. He replies. “My hour has not yet come,” yet he instructs the servants (in brown standing next to the empty jars) to fill six stone water jars used for ceremonial washing.

They fill the huge jars with water (lower left corner). “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet (lower middle, dressed in red).” They do so.

The master of the banquet tastes the wine and calls the bridegroom (lower right corner, dressed in green) to exclaim that the bridegroom has saved the best wine for last.

This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory; and his disciples put their faith in him.
